Introducing BC Garn

We are happy to introduce you to a new member of the KW family, BC Garn. You've probably noticed the yarns popping up on our blog and social media, and we figured it was time for a formal introduction!

BC Garn, a family owned Danish yarn company, was founded in 1972 as Væveværkstedet i Barrit (the Weaving Workshop in Barrit). Their initial focus on high-quality weaving yarns has evolved into a line of luxury organic and ecologically minded hand knitting yarns, offered at an affordable and competitive price.

BC Garn is known for quality yarns, and Alba, Bio Balance and Bio Shetland are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) - the highest international standard for organic fiber production.

"The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain."

GOTS certified yarns and textiles are globally recognized, not just for using organically grown fibers, but for ensuring the social and environmental conditions of every level of production are to the highest standards. The social responsibility aspect of the GOTS certification ensures that:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected
  • Working conditions are safe and hygienic
  • Child labour must not be used
  • Living wages are provided
  • Working hours are not excessive; no discrimination is practiced
  • Regular employment is provided; harsh or inhumane treatment is prohibited

GOTS certification also ensures that the energy and water consumption, the emissions, environmental responsibility, and chemical outputs from the field to the shelves of your local yarn shop are of the highest international organic and ecological standard.

Kelbourne Woolens received our GOTS Certification through Oregon Tilth on April 17, 2018.

We are currently offering seven BC Garn yarns to Local Yarn Shops in North America. Click on the images below to learn more about each yarn.

In the coming months we'll be going in depth on each of the yarns, sharing some fantastic indie designer patterns, as well as some of our own creations, new and old.

Kelbourne Woolens Enamel Pins!

Kelbourne Woolens is deep in the pin game!

Enamel pins are everywhere, and we're not immune to the fun of collecting them to add to our project bags, backpacks, and hoodies.

When we did some rebranding at the end of the year in celebration of our 10th anniversary, it only made sense to honor the milestone with a logo pin. And with the release of Andorra and Scout, we designed pins for those as well!

We couldn't let our love for swatching go uncelebrated, either, so we decided to wave our swatch flag proudly...with a pin! No one can deny the allure of glitter, so we added some bling to the simple design to really let our love shine.

All of our pins come on a heavy card and are available in our online shop or at a LYS near you. Enjoy!

Introducing Luma

What better thing to dream about during gloomy February weather than a brand new yarn, perfect for year round knitting? We're delighted to share the newest yarn in The Fibre Co. lineup with you, Luma.

A classic DK weight yarn, Luma is inspired by the mood and light found in mid-latitude savannas—grassland ecosystems with open canopies allowing plenty of sunlight. Daily life in mid-latitude climates, whether in the drier Mediterranean or temperate Great Plains of the USA, are best handled with a layered approach to clothing. Plant-based fibers mixed with silk and wool provide a built-in layer of warmth in winter yet lightness when required in warmer temperatures. The Luma palette includes soft neutrals and bright shades of pink, blue, and green.

• 50% merino wool, 25% organic cotton, 15% linen, 10% silk
• 137 yds/50 gram skein
• 21-23 sts = 4" (10 cm) on US 5-6 Needle

Luma does a wonderful job of filling in a hold previously left by Savannah in The Fibre Co. lineup - the astute of you will even notice some clear similarities between the two! During the process, we were delighted at the possibility of sourcing organic cotton again, so that is being used in a slightly higher percentage instead of the conventionally sourced fiber. We also replaced soya fiber with silk. Another change that we made was in the spin of the yarn. Luma is a much smoother, cleaner spin and ply, and the resulting 2-ply has a really crisp, clean hand.

In conjunction with the release of the yarn, we have a wonderful sweater collection to share with you, as well as a free pattern designed by one of our wonderful sales reps, and some swatch samples in various stitch patterns. Stay tuned for all that and more here on the blog!

Luma is in stock and shipping to yarn stores all over N. America - ask for it at your favorite LYS today!
